Somewhere in his Heart

Gandalf had forever appeared and disappeared far and wide, wherever he wished, whenever he pleased, drifted unaccompanied throughout the darkness, the light, the plains, the forests, vast swift brooks he crossed, colossal peaks he scaled, chaste grasslands he rode. A remarkable voyager, blanketing middle earth in all its expanse, leaving no stone unturned. Well indeed, he journeyed with no other, but alleys he had many. Oh yes, unkept, proud, pointy-eared beings, an extensive list of contacts and acquaintances. And yet...

A warrior. Yes. Strong-hearted, valiant and true. A superior of mortals, a wise console of all. He saw daylight even in the darkest of nights, a glint of worth in the most sinful of beings, a beating heart in the coldest of kings and peasants alike. His heart bled for the suffering of those he treasured, respected, loved...

Songs were sung of him, written though admiration, gratitude, even amusement much to his light-hearted pleasure. They looked up to him. He knew so much, appreciated them, learnt from them and offered himself to them, all his insight, his heart, his soul, his mind. Often they dismissed his good judgment, though he would merely wave it off and continue as if nothing at all had happened.

As was Gandalf, the aged immortal, the lone storm crow, the indisputably devoted, the deviously unknown. And unknown he truly was after all, shrouded in the haze of mystery. They could not help but believe he was in fact forlorn and in truth he must be.

And so they watched him, stood a solitary figure in the close distance, cloaked in the dripping wet of rain, droplets embracing the lengthy mane and cloud-like fuzz erupting from his chin. Arms spread out to the heavens, head raised, eyes closed. An unmistakable smile gently placed on his lonesome face. At least somewhere within his very essence dwelled the undying core that was joy.
