Mysterious Messenger

By Rachel M. Sifers

Aragorn, future king of Gondor (also called Strider) was leading four Hobbits, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Sam Gamgee, and Frodo Baggins through the Weather Hills. They were heading toward Weathertop Hill, a former Ranger station.

They were being pursued by the Ring-Wraiths because Frodo was carrying the ultimate Ring of power, which belonged to the Wraith's master, Sauron.

Aragorn was loosing hope that they would make it to Weathertop Hill, let alone making it to Rivendell.

Frodo was wearying and asked,” Can we rest?” Aragorn nodded and motioned for everyone to stop and drop their packs. Sam immediately shed his large pack and pulled

out some dried fruit.

“Can we light a fire, Strider?” Sam asked.

“No! We don't want to attract any undue attention to our camp,” Strider replied quickly.

Merry and Pippin both brought some dried meat out and offered it to Strider. He took it and was about to take a bite, when an arrow ripped it out of his grasp. “Get down,” he hissed to the Hobbits, as he crawled over to the arrow, hoping to determine it's origin.

The arrow's shaft was silver and decorated with seven moonstones. “Who goes there?” Aragorn called softly. “Friend or foe?”

From behind a rock, a cloaked figure jumped out into the open and strode toward their camp. “Aragorn, I have not seen you in many years. How have you been?”

Seeing Strider not reacting in a violent way, the Hobbits sat up and warily eyed the figure. It's eyes seemed to glow softly, but not with evil. The eyes seemed to say 'You can trust me. I'm not evil'

Aragorn was in a hurry to leave before the Wraiths found them and the figure seemed to sense that. “Now down to business. Lady Arwen has given me a message to deliver to you. I must be off before my father finds out I took a detour to deliver an unauthorized message.”

Sam had, by now, regained his courage and asked,” Are you, by any chance a messenger?”
