Taste the Fungus

By Nieriel Raina

“You have to at least try them!”

The elf shook his head adamantly side to side, his lips pressed firmly shut against the spoonful of mushrooms and herbs. “Mmm Mmm,” he hummed.

“Now, Mister Legolas,” Sam chimed in, coming to stand next to Pippin, who was trying his all to get the elf to at least taste the fungus. “It’s my cooking, and I ain’t never cooked nuthin’ that wasn’t good to eat. That’s my gaffer’s recipe too. So, you just open up and taste ‘em.”

Legolas cast a pleading glance at Aragorn, who rolled his eyes and turned away, his hand suspiciously covering his mouth as his shoulders shook. A glance towards Gandalf garnered a similar response. Gimli, much to Legolas’ relief, had excused himself and headed into the brush a few minutes ago, so he was spared any verbal barbs. Merry was frowning at him, and Frodo simply ducked his head with a soft smile. Only Boromir looked sympathetic to his plight, grimacing at the limp fungus resting on the spoon in front of Legolas’ mouth.

“Maybe he doesn’t like mushrooms,” Merry finally said, as if the thought had suddenly dawned on him.

“Not like mushrooms! Why, that is the…um…” Sam’s words stumbled to a stop as Legolas shook his head positively.

“Really?” Pippin asked, eyes wide as his eyebrows climbed to his hairline. “How can anyone not like mushrooms?” Legolas was not about to open his mouth to explain, having learned early on that until the spoon was removed, one was not safe from it being shoved in.

“Actually,” Aragorn turned back to them, his amusement contained in his eyes. “I know several elves that dislike mushrooms.”

“Truly?” Frodo asked in interest. “Who?”

“Well, Erestor for one cannot stand them. I recall he threatened to stuff them up Glorfindel’s nose if he didn’t stop trying to get him to eat them one night.”

Legolas looked at the man in shock. He had never seen Elrond’s Chief Councilor get that irate before.

“And Elladan is not fond of them, but Elrohir loves them.”

‘Ah,’ Legolas thought. ‘Now I know how to tell them apart at dinner when they dress identically.’

“Let’s see, who else do I know….” The hobbits were looking at Aragorn curiously, waiting for him to continue. Pippin still held the horrid spoonful of mushrooms in Legolas’ face, though, so Legolas kept his mouth shut. “Oh, yes,” the ranger smirked, “The Elvenking and his son.”

That did it! “Aragorn, you know good and well that…MMmph!”

Too late, the spoon of mushrooms was thrust in and now he only had a couple of options. He could be polite and try to eat them – doubtful. He could spit them out and hurt the hobbits’ feelings – not possible. He could pretend to swallow and then wander off to spit them out – maybe. But whatever, he needed to do it now.

Trying not to grimace, he made the motion of chewing, but the texture and flavor nearly turned his stomach. He needed to inhale!

But it is never a good idea to inhale deeply when one has a mouthful of food, especially through one’s mouth. And so Legolas found himself with a mushroom lodged in his throat. He quickly stood and turned away from his companions, coughing violently. The mushroom dislodged itself and came flying out (along with the others) and he gasped for breath.

“Legolas? Are you alright?” It was Pippin.

But Legolas could now feel his face heating, and tears from the tickle in his throat ran down his face. He started to walk towards the trees, thinking only to flee long enough to compose himself when he heard the soft whisper.

“I’m sorry.”

Wiping his eyes and mouth on his sleeve, he turned to look at a stricken Pippin. He forced a smile. “I am alright, Pippin.” He coughed again, clearing his throat.

“Of all the stupid things to do!” Sam bustled over with a cup of water. “Here, you go, Mister Legolas. I didn’t mean for Pippin to force you like that.”

The young hobbit looked suitably chastised. “I only wanted him to taste them,” he mumbled.

Legolas sipped the water, thankful that it washed the taste of the mushrooms from his mouth. “I apologize. I just cannot abide the taste or texture of mushrooms. I never have. It used to make my mother fuss!”

Pippin grinned and the others chuckled. “And did she fuss at your pop, too?”

Legolas snickered and grinned at the memory. “Oh, yes! I can hear her now.” He pitched his voice high like that of a lady. “Thranduil! You should be setting the example! Eat your mushrooms!”

The others joined in the mirth just as Gimli returned to their camp. “What is so funny?” he asked suspiciously, but no one could stop giggling long enough to explain. The Dwarf grunted. “Very well, keep your secrets!” He dug around in a pouch at his waist. “Sam, I found you some more mushrooms.”

Gimli never did understand why several members of their company suddenly dropped to the ground holding their sides in laughter.

Feast on Mushrooms

By Nieriel Raina

Pippin glanced at the dark haired elf on his right, and then at the golden haired one seated on his left. He had the strangest feeling that he had been placed between these two on purpose, almost like how his mother would make him sit between two of his younger cousins who were known to misbehave at the table. So far, the elf on his right, Glorfindel, smiled and chatted with the other guests around him. The other, however, quietly observed the great hall in which they were seated and kept casting glances down the table at Strider and his lady, or over at Glorfindel, who ignored the looks. Pippin looked across the table at Merry with a grin.

Merry’s gave him a crooked smile, his eyes widening comically as just his eyes moved left to right at the fair folk seated around them. “Good company we have here,” he said. The elf seated on the older hobbit’s right laughed and engaged Pippin’s cousin in conversation.

Pippin listened for a time, but his attention kept being drawn back to the elf on his right who appeared to be a bit uncomfortable. He had already tried to engage Erestor in conversation, but the elf did not seem that interested in the things that Pippin did. Still, it was not like the young hobbit to remain quiet for any length of time, and in truth, he was growing bored waiting for the food to be brought in. It seemed Gondor had a lot to learn about how to throw a feast. Why, everybody knew you always started a feast with the food on the table!

And so he turned again to Erestor. “I’m hungry. I wonder how much longer until we eat.”

Erestor’s lips turned up in a resemblance of a smile, yet he sighed. “I am not sure, Peregrin Took. In Imladris, the food is always brought out immediately.”

“I liked the food in Rivendell. I like the food here, if it would just be served.”

Now the elf chuckled. “It seems to me that you like all food, Master Hobbit,” Erestor commented, looking across Pippin’s head at someone, Glorfindel, most likely.

“That is not true.” He said, turning to look at Glorfindel and then back at Erestor. “I do not like cabbage or rutabagas. And I don’t like gizzards in the dressing, or boiled onions by themselves. Onions are alright in soups and things, but just onions? No. And I don’t like strawberries, though I do like blueberries….”

“That is good,” Glorfindel interrupted with a grin. “Blueberries are my favorite.”

“I prefer raspberries,” Erestor commented.

“Yes, well, that is because you like sour things.” Glorfindel cast a mischievous glance at the other elf, and Pippin, not happy that the conversation had taken a new direction, frowned.

“I like raspberries, but with cream and sugar, and….”

“Yes, but Erestor likes them just by themselves – tart.” The golden haired elf smirked, and Erestor began to fidget, looking a bit upset at the other’s pointing out his likes.

“And you like peaches and cream. What is your point, Glorfindel?”

“I like sweet and you like sour.”

Pippin felt as if he were watching a game of pass the potato. No wonder someone needed to sit between them. He looked up at Merry, but his cousin was still speaking with those on either side of him and had missed the exchange.

“What are you implying?” Erestor asked, and Pippin felt as if the air had suddenly gone chill.

But Glorfindel shrugged. “I like sweet and you like sour. Just an observation.”

“Indeed.”

“Well, as I was saying, I like…” But just then the doors were pushed open with great ceremony and the food arrived on large platters carried by servants in pristine dress. “Oh, good,” Pippin forgot what he had been saying, “the food is here.”

Bowls and platters were set on the table in front of them, and Pippin’s eyes scanned the fare. There were roast fowl, sliced venison, and fish sautéed in butter. Nearby were bowls of fresh greens, steaming potatoes, sliced carrots with apples in a sweet sauce with raisins and a couple bowls of which he could not see the contents.

“Are there mushrooms?” he piped up, straining to see in the bowl nearest Glorfindel.

“I do hope not,” a grumble came from beside him.

Pippin turned in surprise, but then remembered what Strider had told them early in their journeys. Not all elves liked mushrooms. He wondered if Erestor was the one who had threatened another, but he couldn’t remember who Strider had said, so he shook his head. “I hope there are. I love mushrooms.” He turned back to the golden haired elf with a hopeful look. “Are there?”

“Indeed, Master Hobbit, there are!” It was said with a bit too much enthusiasm, and Pippin decided these two must be the ones Strider had referenced. “Would you like some?” The elf lifted a bowl, and took hold of the spoon to serve Pippin.

“Yes, yes, I would, thank you,” Pippin said, noting the grimace and paling of Erestor’s features when the fungus was scooped onto his plate. “But I don’t think Erestor wants any.”

Before Erestor could respond, Glorfindel grinned. “Oh, I know. Erestor is not as adventurous in food as some of us, so he has not yet come to like the taste of mushrooms.”

The dark haired elf glared. “I do not find fungus appetizing. And since I do not have to ingest it to survive, I will pass.”

That statement peaked Pippin’s curiosity. He swallowed the bite of mushrooms in his mouth and asked, “What do you mean, not have to ingest them to survive?”

Erestor shook his head and blanched. He waved his hand dismissively, and reached for the roast pheasant. “It is a tale better told by Glorfindel. After all, he was there.”

Pippin turned to look at Glorfindel, who was cutting a piece of the roast venison before placing it in his mouth. “Well, what did he mean?”

Glorfindel chewed slowly and then swallowed. He took a drink from his wine goblet, and began the tale.

:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:

Estel sniffed and rubbed his hands together for warmth while his brothers built up the fire. It was his first long trip into the Wilds with his brothers and Glorfindel, and the weather had turned unseasonably cool. It was barely Iavas. Normally the weather was still hot at this time of the year, but the temperature had dropped when the sky became overcast. “What will we eat since we found no game?”

Elrohir looked over at him with a knowing smile. “Glorfindel has not yet returned, Estel. He will have something. He always has something.”

“Though you might not wish to eat it,” Elladan mumbled under his breath, earning a smack on his arm from his brother.

“Do not start. Estel needs to learn to eat what he can find in the wilds, no matter how palatable it is.”

The young man, approaching his sixteenth year, wrinkled his nose and glanced around looking for the Captain of Imladris. “What do you mean, no matter how palatable? What could he bring that tastes bad?”

“Mushrooms,” Elladan blurted out to the ire of his brother, judging by the irritation in Elrohir’s eyes.

“Yech,” Estel made a face that matched his eldest brother’s expression. “I do not like mushrooms.”

“Then you will go hungry, young one.”

The sons of Elrond turned to see Glorfindel smiling at them, holding a sack in one hand and a single hare in the other. Estel eyed the fat rabbit. “I’ll eat that,” he pointed to the hare.

Glorfindel shook his head, but tossed the game to him. “You will clean it as you have been shown, and then cut up the meat. I will cook it with these.” He held up the sack. “Tonight we feast on mushrooms!”

Again, Estel and Elladan’s expressions were so similar, this time Elrohir laughed. “Come, brothers, the other option is to hope a deer stumbles into our camp, and I seriously doubt that will happen. So, hurry up, Estel, I’m hungry.”

“But I hate mushrooms!” the young man complained as he moved over to a rock with a fairly flat surface and began to skin the rabbit with a sharp knife. Glorfindel had already gutted the hare away from camp. It would not do to attract any bears that might be in the area looking for any food to fatten themselves up before their winter’s sleep. “Ada does not make me eat them.”

“And when you are at home, where there is plenty to eat, you may skip the mushrooms, Estel.” Glorfindel sat a pan on another rock, tossing mushrooms into it as he sliced them, along with several herbs. The older elf moved much quicker than Estel, and he brought the pan over to where the boy sat cutting the meat off the bones as best he could and adding it to Glorfindel’s pan. When he was finished, he gathered up the remains of the rabbit and took them into the woods and buried them, while Glorfindel set about cooking the rabbit and mushrooms.

The smell of the cooking rabbit, mushrooms and herbs caused Estel’s mouth to water, but when he was finally given his share, he quickly ate the rabbit and the herbs large enough to make a bite, and left the mushrooms. He was still hungry, but could not bring himself to eat the vile mushrooms. With disappointment, he noticed that the meal had been divided evenly, so there was nothing else left in the pan for him to pick out. To his dismay, even Elladan ate all his food, though he made a face while doing it.

“Are you going to eat those?” Elrohir eyed his mushrooms hungrily.

Estel’s stomach rumbled, and sighed. ‘Yes,” he said grumpily. Then he stabbed a piece of the fungus and put it in his mouth and chewed.

:-:-:-:-:-:-:

“But Strider seemed to like mushrooms when we were traveling,” Pippin pointed out. The meal had progressed while he listened to the story, and now people were beginning to stand and mingle. The hobbit remained seated between the elves, helping himself to another serving of mushrooms. “And it doesn’t sound to me like he liked them very much back then, even if he ate them.”

“No,” Glorfindel agreed. “He ate them, but nearly gagged on them. Still, he learned the importance of eating on the trail over being finicky.”

“I am not finicky.” Erestor sniffed.

“I did not say you were.”

“You implied it.”

“I did not.”

Pippin’s neck was getting tired. “But how did Strider come to like mushrooms?”

“I ate them a lot.”

Pippin turned to find the new King of Gondor standing behind them looking amused. “So much you learned to like them?”

Strider nodded, and cast a glance at his new wife as she came to stand beside him. “And I learned that my beloved happened to be fond of them as well. So, I made a point of trying them different ways, until I found a few recipes I liked. Over time, I suppose I forgot I disliked them.”

The lady smiled knowingly at something Pippin felt he had missed. Then a thought occurred to him. “Erestor,” he turned to look at the elf who returned his look warily. “maybe if you just tried them…”

“I am not eating fungus!”

There came a snort, and Pippin glanced at Glorfindel. “Careful, Peregrin Took,” the golden haired elf said with a grimace. “You do not wish to force mushrooms on Erestor. For I can assure you that mushrooms shoved up one’s nose is not a pleasant experience.”

Pippin’s eyebrows rose and he turned to look at Erestor. The dark haired elf just sat there, staring at his plate with a satisfied smirk on his face.

“What a waste of mushrooms,” Pippin said, returning to his own plate and shoveling in another bite.

“What’s a waste of mushrooms, Pip?” Merry asked, catching just the end of the conversation.

“Oh nothing, Merry.” Pippin replied eyeing his empty plate. His eyes strayed to Glorfindel’s plate. “Are you going to eat that?” And before the elf could reply, he stabbed the last mushroom and popped it in his mouth. “MMmm….these are good mushrooms. You should have tasted them, Erestor.”

Asleep or dead?

It was the first night the Fellowship of the Ring had set out from Rivendel. Worn from their long walk, the Men, Hobbits and Wizard were more then ready for rest. The only elf among them, Legolas of Mirkwood however, seemed content enough and perhaps able to travel further. Behind him as they looked for a place to camp, Legolas could hear Gimli son of Gloin grumbling about the endless energy of elves.

Smirking to himself, Legolas helped to gather firewood and sat with his back against a tree, absentmindedly stroking his bow which laid in his lap. Gimli and Gandalf sat smoking their pipes, weary to keep the wind blowing it away from the elf though Gandalf was the only one that knew why elves dispised pipeweed so much. Aragorn was to Legolas's left, huming an elvish song under his breath and staring up at the branches of the trees overhead. Huddled together the four Hobbits look remanicent of a litter of pups, speaking quietly to one another and occasionally giggling at strange little jokes. Boromir sat on Legolas's right, staring at the fire, hands occasionally twitching as if his thoughts were restless.

Gimli decided to take the first watch and despite Legolas's best attempts to take the watch the dwarf refused.

“A dwarf has eyes just as keen as an elf!” Gimli insisted stubbornly, knocking the flat of his ax blade against a tree trunk.

Wincing, Legolas frowned. “You seem unable to compreihend that I don't sleep as much as you dwarf. You'll be asleep and snoring before the hour is past!”

“Enough!” Gandalf barked, frowning at both the dwarf and prince. “Gimli shall take first watch, it is settled now let us get some rest.”

Shooting a meaningful look at Legolas, Gandalf settled himself comfortably and soon the wizard was asleep. One by one the rest of the Fellowship followed his lead starting with the Hobbits and then Boromir. For a while longer, Legolas and Aragorn sat awake, occasionally pointing out stars until Aragorn also dropped off to sleep. Glaring at the dwarf to pass the time, Legolas knew he should stay awake, certain the dwarf was going to fall asleep.

The quiet whispering of the trees however urged the prince to rest. They had watched the Fellowship toil and travel many miles and wished no harm to befall the prince of their kin to the north. Almost reluctantly the elf's eyes glazed and his head fell to one side, resting on Aragorn's shoulder, eyes staring blankly into the night.

Gimli jumped slightly as a loud snore from Pippin startled him to wakefulness. Blushing scarlet the dwarf realized he had fallen asleep. Glancing around the camp he found the wizard, Men and Hobbits still asleep. Hoping beyond hope the elf hadn't noticed, Gimli cast a weary glance toward the elf beside Aragorn. He did a doubletake so fast he felt his neck pop.

The elf was sitting up against a tree beside Aragorn, blond-haired head on Aragorn's shoulder. What startled Gimli was the elf's eyes. They were glazed and blank, staring at him across the camp but not seeing him. The embers of the fire threw eerie shadows over the elf's pale face, blowing dully in his blue eyes which seemed darkened to black.

“The elf is dead!” Gimli yelped, leaping to his feet and nearly kicking Boromir. Jerking awake the Man of Gondor sat bolt upright, unsettling the Hobbits. The yelps and noise thus woke Aragorn and Gandalf.

Aragorn sensing unease sprang to his feet and heard Legolas yelp which made them all start. Looking around, Aragorn found nothing out of place apart from the fact that it was past midnight, not dawn and he was awake. Gandalf was looking at Gimli, Boromir looking for danger, the Hobbits clustered together and Gimli staring at Legolas. Looking down, Aragorn saw Legolas push himself into a sitting position, having fallen over when Aragorn stood up. The prince looked confused and had a long knife in his hands, blue eyes slightly dazed.

“What happened?” Legolas asked as everyone shared confused looks.

“Gimli decided to get a start on the day” Boromir said, frowning at the dwarf and rubbing his back where he'd been kicked.

“I did not!” Gimli blustered, blushing as red as his beard.

“Then why pray tell are we all awake at this unholy hour?” Gandalf asked, looking expectantly down at the flustered dwarf.

“Him!” Gimli barked, jabbing a finger at Legolas.

Looking confused, Legolas raised a brow. “What?”

“He was dead!”

Aragorn couldn't hold back his laughter. The Man and elf both laughed, Gandalf joining in when he realized what Gimli had seen. Aragorn dropped to his knees beside Legolas, crying as he laughed and Legolas was holding his sides. Around them, Gimli looked fit to explode with rage while the Hobbits and Boromir looked thoroughly confused.

“Um, Strider, what's so funny about Legolas being dead sir?” Sam asked at last as Strider and Legolas quieted their laughter.

“Nothing Sam, nothing at all” Gandalf said, eyes bright with amusement. “Luckily however, Legolas is far from dead.”

“Aye, I am” Legolas agreed, wiping his eyes.

“He was dead I swear he was!” Gimli blustered furiously.

“He appeared so to your eyes Gimli, you are not used to elvish sleep” Aragorn said quickly, hoping to abate the dwarf's embarrassment. “Elves sleep with their eyes open and glazed for they do not truly sleep.”

“We wander through our memories and the world around us to rest and need not be still to do so” Legolas added.

“Really?” Merry asked. “So, you could sleep while riding a horse or walking?”

“Aye” Legolas confirmed, smiling. “We need not sleep as often as humans but it refreshes our souls and prepares us for the day if we do.”

Growling in dwarvish, Gimli frowned at the elf. “Don't do that again you bloody elf! I nearly had a heart attack!”

Shrugging, Legolas looked at Aragorn whom was once again sitting next to him. “It's not my watch yet, so I bid you all goodnight.” Nodding to the Hobbits, wizard, dwarf and Men, Legolas leaned back against the tree, staring at the sky.

Before the astounded Hobbits, Boromir and Gimli the elf's eyes glazed. Crystaal blue irises darkened to midnight blue and the pupils became unfocused. His breathing became shallower and there was a sense that the body was now empty but not as if in death, simply the spirit was wandering or had retreated. Gandalf settled himself down again and Aragorn did as well.

“Is he ok?” Pippin whispered to Merry.

Aragorn laughed softly. “Aye Merry, he is well.”

Glancing at his friend, Aragorn tilted the prince's head so it rested again on his shoulder. The last thing Legolas would need was getting a crick in his neck from sleeping with his head tilted back all night.

“I'll take the watch for now” Boromir volenteered, glancing at Gimli.

“Aye, you do that” Gimli growled, stomping over to a tree and leaning against the trunk with his ax close at hand.

As the group settled down again, Gimli glanced over at the elf and shuddered. No matter what the elf said or how many people knew it to be true, Gimli couldn't shake the feeling that the elf looked quite dead with his vacant eyes and lack of blinking. Grumbling unhappily the dwarf tried to find a comfortable way to fall asleep. He didn't see how Aragorn and Legolas could sleep against a tree all night. “Bloody elves” he grumbled. Out of the corner of his eye, Gimli could have swarn he saw Legolas's lips twitch in a smile.

“What’s the quickest way to Mordor?” Legolas asked.

“Well, we can travel the mines of Moria, my cousin Balin will give us a royal welcome,” Gimli replied.

“Yeah, that’s one possibility, but let’s check them all,” said Gandalf.

“Oh, Oh, Oh, I got one!” said Pippin.

“Yes, What?” asked Gandalf.

“Let’s go take a shortcut to the mushrooms!” Pippin replied.

“I’m with Gimli,” said Aragorn.

“I’m with Pippin,” said Merry.

“Let’s vote,” interrupted Boromir, “raise your hand if you want to take a shortcut to the mushrooms…. One, two, and me so that’s three.”

“Let’s go with Gimli since we lost,” said Pippin.
